Seg\u00fan Orpha.net, aproximadamente entre el 4% y el 8% de la poblaci\u00f3n mundial vive con un diagn\u00f3stico de enfermedad rara, lo que se traduce en 300 millones de personas. Esto representa un grupo importante de personas que requieren atenci\u00f3n especializada en la prestaci\u00f3n de servicios sanitarios. En las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas, se ha prestado mayor atenci\u00f3n a los esfuerzos por estimular la investigaci\u00f3n, el desarrollo y el acceso a los medicamentos para las Enfermedades Raras. Aunque se han producido avances en las pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas y en los marcos regulatorios, todav\u00eda son necesarias varias reformas.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actualmente, los datos sobre Enfermedades Raras en Am\u00e9rica Latina son escasos, la poblaci\u00f3n de Am\u00e9rica Latina y el Caribe seg\u00fan el Banco Mundial es de 652.276.325 (650 millones de personas). Con base en estos datos, se estima que entre 26 y 52 millones de personas viven con una Enfermedad Rara. Aunque se han observado avances, todav\u00eda existen retos de regulaci\u00f3n, infraestructura, registro y pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas, entre otros. El objetivo de la primera mesa redonda fue 1) analizar el panorama actual en Am\u00e9rica Latina, 2) evaluar las barreras y fortalezas en la regi\u00f3n, y 3) proponer recomendaciones para superar estos desaf\u00edos.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Es importante identificar las definiciones de ER. Seg\u00fan la OMS, las Enfermedades Raras son aquellas que se presentan en menos de 5 personas por cada 10 mil habitantes. Sin embargo, esta definici\u00f3n var\u00eda de un pa\u00eds a otro. En la regi\u00f3n latinoamericana, existe una amplia gama de clasificaciones. Por ejemplo, en Brasil, una enfermedad se considera rara cuando afecta a 65 o menos habitantes por cada 100.000. En Colombia, una enfermedad se considera rara cuando afecta a 1 de cada 5.000 individuos. Otros pa\u00edses como Argentina, Chile, M\u00e9xico, Panam\u00e1 y Uruguay consideran que una enfermedad es rara cuando afecta a 1 de cada 2.000
